Give Wine a Human Theme on Ubuntu

by Jim on Sep.12, 2008, under Operating Systems, linux

Wine may be a very handy application on Linux, but it does make your Windows programs look really (really, really, really!) bad. The default Wine theme is somewhat like Windows 95 and is a boring beige, which is a major eyesore next to the orange of Ubuntu’s Human theme.

Whilst you may simply change some of the colours Wine uses, the programs still look odd alongside native applications. Yet Wine has supported msthemes for a long time; although, they do put a slight damper on performance. You won’t really notice this if you have a nice dual core processor, but I can see a Eee struggling with a theme.

As you can see Photoshop CS2 looks much better:You can download the theme from here. Just unpack the archive somewhere and open winecfg (Applications -> Wine -> Configure Wine; or just type winecfg in the terminal.) Choose the Desktop Integration tab and choose Install Theme. Navigate to the themes fodler and choose the .msstyles file. Now you can simply choose which theme you want :D

To remove it just switch the theme back.

Silly post of the week: Vending Machines… grr…

by Jim on Sep.06, 2008, under Pictures, Random, The real world, university

This happened ages ago, but was rather annoying. Must have been a all nighter due to some project… lets hope this does not occur on Monday night/Tuesday morning…

My last 60 pence too!

My last 60 pence too!

In a strange move, you can’t move an image down the page in Wordpress 2.6 if there is no text above it. Makes me think: bug, feature, or hidden button? Mmm… medium picture size is tiny too, I don’t really want to resize my photos down to 640×480 every time. That images shows what Wordpress does to a nice 5 mega pixel picture if you let it loose.

Will there be another picture next week? Will there be the shock of another post tomorrow? Who knows, accidentally stumble here thanks to the wonders of Google to find out!

Stupid Theme

by Jim on Sep.05, 2008, under Site Related, university

As you may have noticed, I’ve changed the theme on this site to Diary Notes. I found one annoying issue with the theme — the author decided to leave his/her meta tags in. Mmm… not so smart! I don’t think many people will want those in!

So this post is just to make sure the happy google bot has another look at this site, before the dodgy tags break stuff. Nice to see that this site actually ranks in google these days.

Project inspection/demonstration on Tuesday (silly department can’t organise themselves.) Now, that’s not so bad… but its at 9:30 in the morning! No I am not that lazy, it’s just I live around an hour and a half from Birmingham — that’s without the morning traffic! Lucky for me the drive in means I’ll be on the main commuting road in my county… and I have to pass through another city… brilliant! So I’ll have to set off well before 7 am to give myself the time so set things up for the demonstration.

In even better news, I should see my project supervisor beforehand. Now I can’t do that on Tuesday, so I have to go in on Monday too!

Perhaps an allnigher will occur? Me thinks so!

Upgrade successful

by Jim on Sep.04, 2008, under Site Related

Looks to me like the upgrade to Wordpress 2.6.1 was successful. Everything looks so shiny now :)

Still busy with my project, stupid head of the course can’t be arsed to sort out his timetable… brilliant.

Upgrading Wordpress… expect downtime!

by Jim on Sep.04, 2008, under Site Related

If anything gets screwed up today, then that’s due to some boring maintenance work. I really needed to upgrade Wordpress as this site is stuck on version 2.3.x when it should really be on 2.6.x. I know for a fact my web hosts have kicked people for not upgrading software (security reasons.)
